Could the art save us?

“Art is not only a product of an artist but is an excuse to socialize, to share problems and conflicts and try sketches of solutions.” Quote about the street art in the Librino*.

So, ladies and gentlemen, served on a silver platter there is the opportunity to power, in this case to the politicians who govern the city, to let the things unchanged or to manipulate them exclusively for their own purpose.

If the residents of San Berillo ask a simple daily life, screaming loudly for a return to live of families, artisans and workshops in the neighborhood, in Librino people asks the presence of the whole citizenship to break down the walls rather than decorate them. The art, if we can call it in this term, works just like a pot of flowers put in front of the bars of a prisoner, as the make-up for the paleness of a sick the art trick instead to find a cure for him.

Today the real art has to serve herself; art is the true nothing, is what we lack.

Today the art must be not decorative or consolatory.

*Librino is a neighborhood of Catania with 70,000 inhabitants. Designed by Japanese architect Kenzo Tange in the mid- sixties, the area was thought of as a self-sufficient satellite city of Catania. But it became a place of poverty instead, and above all the core of the organized crime, drug traffickers. Some organizations have tried to fight against ignorance and indifference through the development of numerous projects:

Antonio Presti with The door of beauty;

Blu with the decoration of the palazzo di cemento, Res publica with temporary collective and participatory work of street art.
